Thankfulness According to Psalm 23 ~ Constant Companions and Our Final Destination

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” ~Psalms 23:6

I seriously love this.
This is the perfect way to complete this Psalm.

After all that David has said, he finishes by reminding everyone, including himself, that there will never come a time when he is alone.

Goodness and Mercy will always be there, just a few steps behind and always within arm’s length.
Whenever he needs them, whenever I need them, they’ll be there.
Not just today or tomorrow or next week or next month or next year, but “all the days of my life.”

They are our constant companions along these narrow paths we walk.

No matter how lonely the way may feel at times, the Shepherd is always leading us, and Goodness and Mercy are always following us.
We couldn’t be alone if we tried!

He also reiterates that these paths are leading to a set destination.

We aren’t aimlessly wandering around, just hoping to eventually find a place to dwell.
We’re reminded of a home over the horizon waiting for us.
We have a city of habitation whose builder and maker is God at the end of the way.

We won’t settle in just any city or just any home.
When this life is over, we will live in the city of God and dwell in the house of the Lord.

The One who left Heaven and a throne traded it for a stable and a manger.
The One who knew no sin became sin for us, for me.
The One who spoke this world into existence hung between heaven and earth and took the punishment I deserved.
The I AM humbled Himself.
The King became a Servant.
The Shepherd became the Lamb.

This is in whose presence we will spend eternity.
This is in whose house we will dwell.

Nothing I could have ever done would warrant this great honor.
I couldn’t earn my way there; I definitely don’t deserve for this place to be my home.
I’m headed to this destination only because my Shepherd led me in this direction.
He’s the reason I started on this path, and He’s the reason I’ll make it home.
It’s all because of Him.

On this Thanksgiving Day, please remember that everything we have to be thankful for is all because of Him.
Our families.
Our homes.
Our friends.
Our church.
Our copy of God’s Word.

Not just the big things, but the little things as well.
A smile from one we love.
The sound of laughter erupting from the next room.
A cup of our favorite coffee.
Our favorite song playing in the background.
Making memories and continuing traditions.

James 1:17 tells us that every good gift and perfect gift is from above.
Every single one.

He truly is the Good Shepherd!
I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful.
This song says it all.
My cup runneth over! šŸ˜Š

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”
